The Spitfire Club

love of reading  |  love of self  |  love for girls across all communities 

At The Spitfire Club, we want every girl to become the empowered, strong, and capable protagonist of her own story.  We do this by creating safe, joyful spaces where girls see themselves in the books they read and in the community they build.

Through free, weekly book clubs in Alexandria’s highest-need neighborhoods, we pair girls in grades 1–5 with dedicated volunteer mentors to experience our girl-centric curriculum that nurtures the whole child. 

We partner with Title I schools, affordable housing communities, and recreation centers to bring Spitfire Clubs to the places where girls already are.  Our programming is completely free — for families and for partner organizations.  Your gift makes that possible.

Each week, Spitfire is reading, playing, and growing with over 90 amazing girls across Alexandria — and this school year, we’ve put more than 800 books into their hands for their home libraries!

We have read with 608 unique (unduplicated) Spitfires,

Our participants have logged reading 111,435 books,

We have distributed over 5,000 books to Club participants,

93% of our Spitfires feel like they belong in the Spitfire Club and 92% share that they are comfortable being themselves,

Caregivers give us an average 98% quality rating, and 96% report that their child improved socially/emotionally because of Spitfire Club!
