Let’s Look Out for Each Other

In Alexandria, our streets are shared spaces. Behind every pair of headlights is a neighbor. Behind every blinker light is a friend. Together, let’s look out for each other, and make sure everyone makes it home safely. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to fund education and advocacy efforts that will improve pedestrian safety in our community. With your financial support, together we can make Alexandria the gold standard for street safety for all.

Read below to find out about our mission and the work we do for our community. Thank you for donating today to support our cause!

Our Impact in 2025:

  • As an important grassroots all-volunteer run organization we have over 1,600 members who are crash survivors, family members of crash fatalities and concerned citizens to bring about change on our streets.
  • This past year we educated over 2,500 students through our school outreach program to elementary and middle schools as well as high school driver’s education students. We teach new drivers about the risks of distracted driving and how to drive responsibly. Looking out for each other means driving with empathy and ensuring those on foot and on bikes have the space they need to stay safe.
  • We believe every pedestrian deserves to be seen. We distributed over 7,000 of our blinking safety lights through our community outreach and educational programs to schools, homeless shelters and community centers. We’ve seen students hang them from their backpacks, dog walkers carrying them out for an evening stroll, families use them to cross streets at night, and the lights dangling from Halloween baskets to make sure trick-or-treaters are visible to cars.
  • We collected over 3,100 entries to our "Near Miss/ Dangerous Locations" survey which collects data on dangerous incidents and creates a map comparing Near Miss locations to historical pedestrian crash data. We have partnered with Virginia Tech Graduate School of Public Affairs and Urban Planning to develop this real time crowd sourcing data on GIS maps. This anonymous data is shared with local police and the City's street engineering staff to advocate for infrastructure improvements.
  • Our Legislative Advocacy work included testifying in Richmond to the Virginia General Assembly on the  following bills:

    • (HB 1220) Delegate Delaney - Create tighter speed safety camera implementation safeguards around school and work zones
    • (HB 994) Delegate Seibold – Speed Safety Cameras with HB 1220 safeguards around school & work zones but also expansion on High Crash Corridors in Northern Virginia
    • (SB 84) Sen Willaims Graves - Install Stop Sign Cameras in school zones.
    • (SB 670) Sen Salim – Allow fully autonomous vehicles to transport property or passengers
      • NoVA FSS opposed SB 670 because of the lack of local jurisdictional oversight
    • Other advocacy efforts include:
      • Braddock Road Corridor Improvement Plan and
      • Letters to Representatives Beyer and Senators Warner and Kaine requesting additional funding for the King-Commonwealth Project.

We can continue this critical work of education, outreach and advocacy only with your support. Spring2Action is our biggest fundraising day of the year - please donate today. THANK YOU!

Donate for Safer Streets

$25 dollar donation: Help us fund our public outreach at Farmers Markets and Community Events to distribute the blinker lights. In Alexandria, we believe visibility shouldn't be a luxury—it’s a necessity. Help us empower our neighbors to look out for each other by funding the tools and education that save lives.

$50 dollar donation: Support our education outreach teaching students about street safety and distributing the blinker lights. We teach new drivers about the risks of distracted driving and how to drive responsibly. Looking out for each other means driving with empathy and ensuring those on foot and on bikes have the space they need to stay safe.

$100 dollar donation: Support our technology program that includes our Near Miss App and Data Policy Roundtables. We look out for each other by identifying dangerous intersections on a crowdsourcing real time basis that allow us to work with City transportation departments to advocate for pedestrian friendly changes to our roads.

$250 dollar donation: Support our advocacy program so we can continue to testify and represent street safety interests to our local and state legislature calling for infrastructure and laws that protect us all. With frequent visits to Richmond to work with law makers we are creating a state standard of looking out for each other in Virginia.
