Alexandria Seaport Foundation works with young adults (ages 18-23) that need support to move forward in their lives and to navigate barriers to more productive and brighter futures. Many are having difficulty finding their place in the world as they move from adolescence to adulthood.

Our Apprentice Program. By introducing Apprentices to woodworking, traditional boat building, on-the-water navigation, life skills classes, and individualized mentoring, they begin to develop confidence, discipline, resiliency, and problem-solving skills. They take on new tasks where they learn to appreciate their own abilities and potential. The Program creates pathways to employment opportunities, trade schools/apprenticeships, or post-secondary education.

Our Community. Staff, volunteers, and Program Graduates work alongside Apprentices for six months, helping them discover the connection and community support they need to start transforming their lives.

Our Impact. Apprentices gain necessary workforce and life skill sets. Our Graduates have entered the construction, carpentry, welding, auto mechanic, or other trade fields; the military; the maritime industry; or pursued additional schooling/training/apprenticeships. Some have pursued other fields like culinary arts and interior design. Some Apprentices need help completing their GED, getting a driver’s license, opening a bank account, or finding stable housing – critical components to finding gainful employment and for starting their journey toward a more self-sufficient life.

Our Graduates. When Apprentices graduate from our Program, they are prepared to become contributing members to their communities and to their workplaces, and to support their families. Hear what Graduates say about their experiences:
