An Underground Mission to Help Dozens of Cats

AN UNDERGROUND LIFESAVING MISSION – Cats & Kittens - Sickness, Squalor & Heartbreaking Rescue 

This week, our team headed to tackle a truly horrific situation involving individuals living in such squalor with dozens of cats, that the past, present and futures for the humans and the cats is nothing less than heartbreaking.

The scene: Trash and feces cover the floors of what used to be a home. Furniture destroyed and covered in urine and feces, tattered and covered in trash. An infested mattress lies in the bedroom among the trash and feces. The odor is so overwhelming that PPE is required. The humans themselves are covered in filth, barefoot and seemingly unaware of their circumstances. The house is uninhabitable. No human or animal should live this way. This is the reality we have faced this week. The pictures are something you can’t u.

For legal reasons, we cannot disclose where we are going. The people are most likely to be removed for severe physical and mental health issues. The house, most likely to be demolished and burned due to the health hazards. The animals – well we do not know what outcomes we will be able to give them.

Our team has been onsite trapping cats who have been breeding and living like this for years. Many are sick, all are inbred and in weeks, they will have nothing. No house to hide in or under, no humans to co-exist with, no food or water. Thus, this is why they all must be moved from this location. They face potential poisoning or shooting, as we see too often when cats are allowed to live like this and take over properties by no fault of their own.

Several have needed humane euthanasia due to their medical and feral conditions – an outcome we avoid at all costs, but is sometimes simply the most humane thing we can offer. Others that are tame enough we are thrilled to be giving them the opportunity for a new life if their medical conditions can be overcome. We have brought our expertise to the situation, as we do every month during our fieldwork, with the goal of doing what is best for the animals.

We anticipate the cost of the care for any of the cats we are able to save being very, very high. These are cats that have never had a single vaccine, deworming, flea treatment, veterinary exam. They have bred with each other and literally live in a biohazard.
