Housing Alexandria

For over two decades, Housing Alexandria has worked to make Alexandria a place where all can thrive and have equal access to opportunity. We are solely and exclusively dedicated to the City of Alexandria and to providing affordable housing and community development for Alexandria residents. This includes engaging with local organizations and residents to meet the needs of those in our community and to create spaces and resources that will improve the lives of Alexandrians. 

Housing Alexandria remains committed to creating and maintaining quality affordable housing and community-centered spaces. This year, we are continuing to strive to improve life for our residents and those in our community. 

While we do develop and manage affordable housing developments, our work is deeper than that. We also provide direct services to our current and future residents so that they are empowered to meet their needs and thrive in the community. These direct services are the mission and work of our Residents Services program, which is funded in large part with our Spring2ACTion fundraising. With your help, this year Resident Services will be able to bring the following to our communities this year: 

1. Resource Fairs: Housing Alexandria seeks to capitalize on partnerships made in the community and to empower our residents to achieve stability in their finances and in their community by holding resource fair events to educate and inform our residents on information such as career opportunities in the community. These resource fairs are held at each of our properties where our residents live, which makes them easily accessible to our residents. Your donation will help us purchase the materials necessary to hold these resource fairs at each of our properties and ensure that our residents have easy access to information that can create new opportunities for them! 


2. Back2School Backpacks: The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time for school children and their families because it is a fresh start in which they are growing and having new experiences. We want to help ensure that the start of each school year is as positive and exciting as it can be for Housing Alexandria families and their children. This is why we partner with other community organizations, including Willie Bailey and Firefighter and Friends to the rescue, to provide school-age Housing Alexandria children with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies, which we deliver to them before the start of the school year. This is especially meaningful to us, because we love to see how excited the children are to choose their own backpack and how grateful the families are that they have more financial flexibility to make the start of the school year special for their children.  


3. Community Gardens: Spring is one of Housing Alexandria’s favorite times of year because it symbolizes renewal, not just of the nature around us, but also for our outdoor resident services programs like our community gardens. Housing Alexandria has community gardens at three of our properties, and we partner with the organization Love and Carrots to maintain these gardens throughout the warm season. These gardens provide Housing Alexandria families with free, fresh produce that can help them live a healthy lifestyle, save money on groceries, and enjoy delicious, fresh fruits and vegetables. They also provide Housing Alexandria families with opportunities for community and relationship building, as residents are free to get their hands dirty together and help maintain the community gardens. Perhaps most exciting, we hold seasonal garden events to get Housing Alexandria families excited about gardening and using the community gardens. 


4. Eviction Prevention: Housing Alexandria’s mission is to ensure that everyone can access affordable housing and thrive in the community of Alexandria. We want to ensure that families in our community can stay in Alexandria and make Alexandria their long-term home. This is why we are committed to reducing eviction rates in our community. Through collaboration between our team, Housing Alexandria residents, and experts in Alexandria, we have implemented an eviction prevention program to achieve this goal. This program has already made a difference decreasing evictions in our community by helping our residents avoid late fees, reducing eviction judgments, and increasing eviction case dismissals. The program is still growing and developing, and your donation would go a long way in helping us strengthen the program to be able to better serve our residents and ensure that they can continue to stay in their home of Alexandria.
