Carpenter's Shelter

About Carpenter's Shelter:

For over three decades, Carpenter's Shelter has grown from a modest initiative of providing bedding in a church basement on cold nights to becoming a front-runner in combating and preventing homelessness. With a compassionate heart, we offer more than just immediate shelter; we deliver comprehensive services aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness for families and individuals. Through our two 64-bed residential facilities [The Hoffman Center and Alexandria Community Shelter], David's Place, and our Winter Shelter program, we provide not just a safe space but also essential services like case management, educational support, mental health assistance, and help in finding permanent housing. Our mission is to empower the 980 children, women, and men we serve annually, who are experiencing or at-risk of homelessness, ensuring they have the tools for lasting independence and a stable environment where they can flourish.

At the core of Carpenter's Shelter is the belief in empowerment, education, and respect. Understanding the complexity of homelessness, we approach each unique situation with solutions that emphasize collaboration, recognizing the diverse factors such as financial struggles, racial disparities, and the impact of recent challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation on housing security. Our vision is to end and prevent homelessness in our community, a goal that starts with compassionate care and the generous support of individuals and events like Spring2ACTion that share our commitment to making a difference.

Michael and Brandon: Finding Stability in a Storm of Uncertainty

When Michael’s* household dynamics suddenly shifted, the stability he once relied on gave way to uncertainty. What had been a steady routine quickly became a season of transition. He and is elementary-aged son, Brandon*, began moving from place to place, doing their best to hold things together.

“We were doing okay financially as a family,” Michael shared. “When everything shifted, it became harder to maintain.”

For Brandon, who is autistic and depends on structure, the instability was especially difficult. A friend’s couch. Then another. Eventually his grandmother’s home. Public bus rides to school. New surroundings with no sense of permanence. Each change felt like another wave during an already difficult season.

While visiting the Department of Community & Human Services in Alexandria to complete paperwork, Michael learned about Carpenter’s Shelter and its Rapid Re-Housing program. Within a week of reaching out, he and Brandon moved into the shelter. The adjustment was not simple. Sharing space and rebuilding from the ground up rarely is. But slowly, the chaos gave way to routine. Regular meals. A consistent bedtime. Transportation that allowed Brandon to remain in school without disruption. In the middle of uncertainty, there was structure. There was guidance. There was steady support.

They guided me the right way,” Michael said. “Sometimes you just need reassurance. They’re the shoulder you put your head on.”

With staff advocating alongside him and a community standing behind him, Michael secured an apartment in Alexandria after three months. Signing that lease was not just a housing milestone. It was relief. It was protection. It was the beginning of rebuilding on solid ground.

Today, Brandon has the consistency he needs to grow and flourish. Michael has regained his sense of direction, setting long-term goals that include one day owning a home. The storm did not define their story. It became the turning point that guided them toward a brighter future.

Be the Shelter in Someone’s Storm!

Storms can arrive without warning. The difference between crisis and stability is a community willing to step in, stand alongside our vulnerable neighbors, and offer steady support when it matters most. Your generosity becomes that shelter, shielding families and individuals through life’s hardest storms. Each gift brings safety, restores direction, and creates momentum toward a new beginning. Together, we can make sure no one weathers uncertainty alone and that more children, women, and men step into lasting stability.
