Together, We Lift Up Alexandria’s Children

The Fund for Alexandria's Child works to enhance the quality of life of children in foster care and children in the City of Alexandria who are at risk of abuse and neglect. Our goal is to strengthen family stability in our community by keeping children safe and surrounding them with the essential resources and meaningful experiences that help them feel supported, valued, and hopeful about their future.

This past year, your generosity provided more than $37,000 in direct support to over 100 children and their families across the City of Alexandria. Because of you, kids and families facing the greatest challenges found stability, dignity, and moments of joy when they needed them most.

What Your Support Made Possible

• Warm coats, safe beds, groceries, medical care, and essential school supplies

• Dance lessons, sports teams, art classes, and summer camps that spark confidence

• Laptops, textbooks, and transportation for youth preparing for adulthood

• Birthdays, field trips, celebrations, and other special moments that create lasting memories

• Crisis Support: In partnership with The Center for Alexandria’s Children, ALX Closet offers children and families in need access to clothing, toiletries, and essential items – providing immediate support with dignity and care.

CJ’s Story: A Home That Finally Fits

When 16‑year‑old CJ entered foster care with his three siblings, his world had already been shaped by the daily challenges of Cerebral Palsy. Unable to ambulate and limited in the use of his limbs, even the simplest routines depended on the accessibility of his environment. Unfortunately, most foster homes simply weren’t equipped for his needs. Months passed, and the hope of finding a family who could welcome him fully—and safely—began to fade.

Then, a remarkable family stepped forward.

Active, warm, and full of life, they opened their home and their hearts to CJ. They had children his age, pets he adored, and a rhythm of family life that made him feel instantly included. After spending a weekend with them, CJ didn’t want to leave. He even left his coat behind—his quiet promise that he’d be back.

But their home needed significant ADA modifications before CJ could live there safely: a fully accessible bathroom. Without these changes, the placement couldn’t move forward.

Because of generous donors to the Fund for Alexandria’s Child, everything changed.

Your support made it possible to renovate a fully accessible bathroom and begin the modifications this family needed. The foster parents shared how incredibly thankful they felt — knowing that CJ could bathe safely, move with dignity, and be cared for without fear of injury. These renovations didn’t just change their home; they strengthened their ability to love and support him fully. This is the power of community. This is the impact of your generosity.

Every week, we’re asked to help with essentials like food, safe beds, clothing, hygiene items, and transportation. We’re also asked to support life‑changing opportunities such as our current request for one of our foster teens who dreams of becoming a chef. She’s been invited to attend a one‑week Culinary Arts Camp at Union Kitchen DC—an immersive program designed for future culinary students. The cost is $1,995, far beyond what her social recreation funds.

Your donation today helps meet these needs—both the urgent and the inspiring. It brings comfort, dignity, and possibility to children who deserve every chance to thrive.

Our Mission

We believe every child deserves a childhood filled with safety, opportunity, and hope. Through community generosity, we help ensure that Alexandria’s children—especially those facing hardship—experience the stability and joy that allow them to thrive. When you give, you’re not just making a donation. You’re stepping into a child’s story at the moment they need someone to believe in them. This past year, your generosity became:

• A safe, new bunk bed, bedding, and dresser for two siblings who had been sleeping on the floor

• Financial dental assistance for a child in foster care needing braces

• Groceries and essentials for a family of six facing an unexpected crisis

• Summer sleep away camp for 6 children and all of the needed supplies (bedding, towels, sunscreen, toiletries, etc.) 

• During Holiday Sharing 2025.....1,832 children and their families in our community experienced the magic of the holidays with a grocery gift card, toys, clothing, and books and 130 seniors and/or adults with a disability received grocery and gift cards.
