SCYC

A nonprofit organization

We are the Santa Claus Yacht Club (SCYC). First of all, we are not a real yacht club. The name is a reflection of the waterfront community where we are located. What we are is a small local charity that helps those in our community who are struggling to help themselves. You can click here to check out our website: SCYC. You will not see any yachts. ; )

We fight Food Insecurity. Today, more than one in three Americans—more than 100 million people—live in poverty or on the edge of it. Half of all Americans will spend at least a few months churning into and out of poverty during their lifetimes. Food insecurity is often a hidden result of poverty. Many of our friends and neighbors are wondering where their next meal is coming from, and we don't even realize it.  This is hidden poverty. Yes, I know, we all see poverty everyday. We see the homeless in the street. But not all poverty is out in the open. What we do not always see is the working single parents who struggle to feed their children. This parent is often a mother. We see her at school functions. Her kids go to school with our kids. And we have no idea that food insecurity is part of their life. It's not obvious that she lives in poverty. This poverty is hidden. This is the poverty on which the SCYC focuses.

The SCYC combats food insecurity by working with social workers in our local elementary schools to help these families. We strive to improve the health of their children through good nutrition. The large portion of that endeavor involves delivering food to those families during the holiday season. We also provide gift cards so that the parents can purchase either more food, or other needed items for their families.

"Santa Claus Yacht Club is a wonderful community partner that has provided essential resources to families at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary for over 7 years.  During the holidays, SCYC members distribute tons of food and gift cards to our Brooks Families so that they can purchase essential items including; food, toys, clothing, and personal care items.  SCYC members are committed to providing for families in the Alexandria community and we are so grateful to have them as a community partner. The resources they provide are instrumental to helping our families have a wonderful holiday season each year."  Jacquelyn Lusk, Social Worker, Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School

The SCYC was founded in 1990 as a fraternal organization to provide an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie among its fellow members in the Alexandria area. The club has evolved into a civic-minded organization intent on helping needy families and fighting hidden poverty in our community.
