Rebuilding Together DC • Alexandria is a gift of volunteered time and materials given with open arms to revitalize neighborhoods and repair the homes of Washingtonians and Alexandrians who are physically and financially unable to perform these repairs. Through the generous support of our community partners, volunteers and donors, we have accomplished great things in the District and the City of Alexandria for over three decades. Since 1986 we have:

• Served households with average annual income of just $31,116. Nationally, there are 25.4 million low-income homeowners, 11.8 million of whom are elderly (Census 2012). 
• Recruited more than 28,000 volunteers, who have worked on more than 2,200 projects.
• Leverage $8.8 million worth of in-kind value to the community.

Rebuilding Together DC • Alexandria is on a mission to safeguard the homes of Alexandria's most vulnerable residents. From families with children to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and veterans, we provide critical home repairs at no cost, ensuring stability, dignity, and well-being for those who need it most.

But we don't stop there. Our dedicated volunteers also breathe new life into shared spaces like schools and parks in underserved neighborhoods, creating vibrant hubs for the community to thrive.

Since 1986, more than 30,000 volunteers have helped transform 3,500 homes and nonprofit spaces, delivering over $10 million of in-kind services to Alexandria. Every repair we make—whether it’s fixing a leaking roof, installing grab bars for a senior, or replacing a broken furnace—prevents a financial crisis and allows a neighbor to remain in the home they love without fear of displacement.

This work is about more than repairs. It’s about restoring dignity, preserving communities, and providing peace of mind. When we come together to help our neighbors, we create lasting change.

Who We Are

Since 1986, more than 29,000 volunteers have donated their time to repair 2,425 homes and nonprofit facilities, leveraging nearly $10 million worth of in-kind value. We serve income-qualifying Alexandria and Washington, DC, homeowners through these programs:

Safe and Healthy Homes, our cornerstone program, focuses on stabilizing 25 items that drastically improve living conditions for a home’s residents, and saves thousands in healthcare costs. This program targets low-income persons living in older or substandard housing who are disproportionately affected by home hazards.

Our Community Strong program provides improvements to a variety of common spaces used by thousands of DC and Alexandria residents with limited income… from senior centers and homeless shelters, to schools and community parks.

A Home of Your Own program provides first-time, low-income buyers with an opportunity to become homeowners. We acquire foreclosed properties, renovate them, and sell the units to income-qualifying low- and moderate-income buyers.
