Established in 2006, the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria is a citizen-led coalition of non-profit organizations, schools, municipal agencies, local businesses, government, community leaders and concerned residents who come together to promote and preserve a healthy Alexandria. The Partnership's purpose is to create and sustain community collaborations to address the most important health needs in Alexandria. This purpose is fulfilled through the successful implementation of the Alexandria Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) 2025. The Plan was created through extensive community conversations, forums, research and direction. The CHIP's three priority areas--housing, mental health and poverty--were selected by the community from among the top 10 health issues identified in Alexandria's 2019 Community Health Assessment. The Plan contains 21 strategies and 80 tactics to provide action-oriented, evidence-based solutions to successfully address the community-identified health priority areas between now and 2025.
In 2021, the Partnership established a grants program to advance the implementation of the CHIP and thus, the health and well-being of everyone who lives works or plays in Alexandria. The Partnership looks to local nonprofits to join in and work on addressing specific goals, strategies and tactics in the CHIP. Grant awards range from $2,500 to $10,000 each.
Since 2021, the Partnership has awarded one-year grants to 10 local nonprofits (two in 2021, four in 2022, four in 2023 and seven in 2024) to implement strategies and tactics to providing more stable housing, increasing access to mental health information and services for children and adults, increasing employment opportunities by promoting small businesses and providing career and college readiness services for youth and adults.. Since 2021, these grants awards totaled over $134,000. While there were several other worthy grant proposals over the last three years, the Partnership was limited in its grant funds. For example, in 2024, the Partnership received grant proposals from 16 nonprofits with a total grant request of over $154,000.
