Who We Are

Established in 2006, the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria is a citizen-led coalition of non-profit organizations, schools, municipal agencies, local businesses, government, community leaders and concerned residents who come together to promote and preserve a healthy Alexandria. The Partnership's purpose is to create and sustain community collaborations to address the most important health needs in Alexandria. This purpose is fulfilled through the successful implementation of the Alexandria Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) that provides action-oriented, evidence-based solutions to improving the health and well-being of everyone in Alexandria.

CHIP 2025 was created through extensive community conversations, forums, research and assessments. It's three priority areas--housing, mental health and poverty--were selected by the community from among the top 10 health issues identified in Alexandria's 2019 Community Health Assessment. Currently, much like for CHIP 2025, the Partnership and the Alexandria Health Department are partnering to help the Alexandria community develop CHIP 2030. That plan will focus on three priorities--overall mental wellness in Alexandria and health and wellness in the Arlandria and Landmark/Van Dorn areas of Alexandria. Again, these priority areas were selected based on data and information in Alexandria's 2025 Community Health Assessment. The most important thing to know about both the Alexandria Community Health Improvement Plans is that they were/are community developed and community implemented.

In 2021, the Partnership established a grants program to advance the implementation of the CHIP and thus, the health and well-being of everyone who lives, works, plays, or prays in Alexandria. The Partnership looks to local nonprofits to join in and work on addressing the health concerns included in the CHIP. Grant awards range from $2,500 to $10,000 each.

Since 2021, the Partnership awarded one-year grants to 24 local nonprofits to implement CHIP 2025 strategies and tactics to providing more stable housing, increasing access to mental health information and services for children and adults, increasing employment opportunities by promoting small businesses and providing career and college readiness services for youth and adults. Over the last five years, these grants awards totaled over $194,000. While there were several other worthy grant proposals over the years, the Partnership was limited in its grant funds. For example, in 2025, the Partnership awarded seven grants to Alexandria nonprofits totaling $60,000 but received 28 grant proposals with a total grant request of over $253,000.

Now we are moving to the new Alexandria Community Health Improvement Plan--CHIP 2030. Our grant program continues and we want to provide at a minimum, the same level of funding to local nonprofits as we have over the last five years. We hope though that we will be able to provide even more funding to local nonprofits to advance the work of CHIP 2030's focus areas and actions and thus, improve the health and well-being of everyone who lives, works, plays or prays in Alexandria. With your help, we can make it happen.

Please support the implementation of the Community Health Improvement Plan 2030 and make a generous donation to the Partnership. Your donation will help provide positive health outcomes to you neighbors.

About Us

The Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria is a resident-led coalition of non-profit organizations, schools, municipal agencies, local businesses, government, community leaders and concerned residents who come together to promote and preserve a healthy Alexandria. It was founded in the belief that to address priority health areas, we must come together as a community--bringing a unique blend of talents, experience, perspectives and passion to identify action-oriented, evidence-based solutions. The Partnership was created in 2006 as a result of the first ever City of Alexandria Community Health Assessment. This year, the Partnership marks a wonderful milestone--its 20th Anniversary--which is a major achievement of a community coalition.

The Partnership is led by a Steering Committee dedicated to improving health outcomes among Alexandrians. This is achieved by partnering with the Alexandria Health Department to facilitate the Alexandria community develop and implement five-year community health improvement plans based on the most recent community health assessment. This resident-led coalition raises funds to award grants to Alexandria focused nonprofits whose work advances the action-oriented, evidence-based solutions in the current community health improvement plan.
