Alexandria City High School Choir is an exemplary music program with stellar opportunities for students to perform choral music in the school and the Alexandria City community. As the only public high school choir in the City of Alexandria, at the largest high school in the Commonwealth, the talented and dedicated students are from many cultures, religions, and economic levelsAll come together to create wonderful music.

Students learn and perform in three distinct groups: Advanced Choir, Mixed/Concert Choir, and Colore Dolce, our women’s choir. All students learn to create an appropriate individual vocal sound and contribute to an ensemble choral sound. Alexandria City Choir repertoire covers many styles from classical to pop from different periods and ranges in difficulty from III-VI based on the Virginia Choral Directors Association rating system.

Under the director of Theodore Thorpe III in his 14th season, choir students work extremely hard to achieve excellence.  As the program rebuilds after COVID and continues to gain local and national recognition, the ACHS Choir is again offered prestigious opportunities to perform and compete each year.  They are learning not just music skills, but also skills in discipline, excellence, and leadership.  Many go on to pursue further music education and careers, but all can use these lessons in whatever future path they take.  The traveling competitions and exhibitions provide opportunities that would not have been available otherwise.

Just weeks ago, the choir achieved top ratings once again in competitions, including superior ratings for the 14th straight year in the District Choral Assessment. This past December, the choir performed with The Washington Chorus at The Music Center as Strathmore and the Kennedy Center Concert Hall as part of the annual "A Candlelight Christmas," which is among the DC region's most beloved holiday traditions. The choir also won the Grand Champion Award for the highest scoring ensemble at the 2024 OrlandoFest along with other awards.

You may have seen students caroling around Alexandria during the holidays to raise funds. As performance and competition opportunities increase for the choirs, so do the expenses. We seek community donations so that we can ensure that all choir students can fully experience these opportunities, regardless of family economic status.

This past week the students traveled to Myrtle Beach for a competition and won first place awards once again. In 2026, we plan to again take a larger trip out of state for the students to perform, learn, and grow together with their teacher.  Donated funds will keep costs as low as possible and provide scholarships so that no student is left behind as we once again offer these treasured opportunities for these talented students.

Please give generously as this program reaches new students in our City! Any amount is appreciated.

Thank you!
