Spring2ACTion for the award-winning choirs at Alexandria City High School!
This is an exemplary music program with stellar opportunities for students to perform choral music in the school and the Alexandria City community. Students learn and perform in three distinct groups: Advanced Choir, Mixed/Concert Choir, and Colore Dolce, our women’s choir.
Your gift will be used to provide funding for competition and exhibition trips, including scholarships, so that all students may participate in these milestone opportunities.
Just a few days ago, the students traveled to the 2026 OrlandoFest competition where they won as Grand Champion for the highest scoring ensemble in 2024. This year, Advanced Choir received 1st Place with a Superior rating. Colore Dolce also received 1st Place with a Superior rating. And for the first time in the history of the competition, Grand Champion was awarded in a tie to two choirs from the same high school: Advanced Choir and Colore Dolce of Alexandria City High School.
Recent highlights:
In the Spring of 2026, all three performing ensembles received superior ratings in both performance and sight-reading in the District Choral Assessment for the 15th straight year.
Colore Dolce was selected by blind audition to perform at the Virgina Music Educators Association in the fall of 2025. The young women of the ensemble rehearsed for many additional hours, beginning in the summer, and gave an incredible performance that was universally praised.
In December 2024, the choir performed with The Washington Chorus at The Music Center as Strathmore and the Kennedy Center Concert Hall as part of the annual "A Candlelight Christmas," which is among the DC region's most beloved holiday traditions.
As the only public high school choir in the City of Alexandria, at the largest high school in the Commonwealth, the talented and dedicated students are from many cultures, religions, and economic levels. All come together to create wonderful music. Students learn to create an appropriate individual vocal sound and contribute to an ensemble choral sound. Alexandria City Choir repertoire covers many styles from classical to pop from different periods and ranges in difficulty from III-VI based on the Virginia Choral Directors Association rating system.
Under the director of Theodore Thorpe III in his 15th season, choir students work extremely hard to achieve excellence. As the program continues to rebuild after COVID, gaining incresased local and national recognition, the choirs are again offered prestigious opportunities to perform and compete each year. They are learning not just music skills, but also skills in discipline, excellence, and leadership. Many go on to pursue further music education and careers, but all can use these lessons in whatever future path they take. The traveling competitions and exhibitions provide opportunities that would not be available otherwise.
As performance and competition opportunities increase for the choirs, so do the expenses. You may have seen students caroling around Alexandria during the holidays to raise funds. We seek community donations so that we can ensure that all choir students can fully experience these opportunities, regardless of family economic status.
Next year, we will take another trip out of state for the students to perform, learn, and grow together with Mr. Thorpe. Donated funds will keep costs as low as possible and provide scholarships so that no student is left behind as we once again offer these treasured opportunities for these talented students.
Please give generously as this program reaches new students in our City! Any amount is appreciated.
Thank you!
