For 50 years, Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) has been dedicated to building strong communities by creating and preserving more than 8,800 apartments across 56 communities in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.—including three communities in Alexandria, VA. Our proven approach integrates quality, stable housing with award-winning Resident Services delivered directly where people live. Last year, AHC Resident Services supported over 6,000 residents, including more than 300 youth in grades K–12, fostering long-term, trusting relationships and providing a foundation for productive, positive lives for families, children, and seniors. Henry's story

We became a part of Henry’s story when his single mother moved Henry and his two siblings into an AHC community. By third grade, Henry was part of our daily Afterschool program and later joined our teen tutoring and mentoring program in high school. 

Henry enrolled in Northern Virginia Community College and transferred to one of Virginia’s four-year universities to become an art teacher. In an essay he wrote when entering college, Henry said: “I look forward to the future with confidence, largely because of my decision to join an afterschool program when I was eight years old.” 

AHC Resident Services focus on Four Cornerstones of Housing Stability:

• Education & Youth Development: AHC’s educational programs support students’ academic success and personal growth in a nurturing environment. Located within the communities where families live, our programs engage children from elementary through high school.
• Health & Wellness:  AHC connects residents with community resources and onsite programs to help residents thrive at every stage of life. Holistic offerings include: onsite health screenings, meal and grocery distributions, and healthy cooking demos. Our senior apartment communities offer exercise classes, arts & crafts, cultural excursions, and workshops to address the everyday challenges of aging. 
• Economic Mobility & Housing Stability: AHC helps residents gain financial stability and housing security through workshops, clinics, and individualized support with programs, including financial guidance & support, career development partnerships, job training & employment readiness, and empowerment programs to help residents achieve personal and professional goals. 
• Community Building & Engagement: Each year, AHC communities host a variety of events — from barbecues to health fairs — to strengthen neighborhood connections. The Resident Ambassador Committee helps to foster an inclusive environment where residents feel connected, informed, and empowered to share their communities. 

AHC’s programs are creating real, measurable changes. Children are graduating from high school and going to college, parents are securing meaningful employment, and seniors are improving their health and well-being.
