Scholarship Fund of Alexandria

A nonprofit organization

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) is a local nonprofit organization established in 1986 to ensure that all bright, hard-working Alexandria City High School (formerly T.C. Williams HS) students have access to college or postsecondary training. We provide free college, career, and financial advising to Alexandria City High School (ACHS) students and their families. For the last 40 years, the SFA has awarded over $22 million in new and renewed scholarships to more than 6,000 graduates of Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS).

  • Just one college degree can mean generations of financial stability and success for an Alexandria student and their family.
  • More than 60% of high school students at ACHS receive free and reduced price lunch. The need for help in our community is real and continues to grow.
  • Almost 70% of our applicants will be the first in their family to go to college.
  • For many of our students, financial aid from the Scholarship Fund means the difference between attending college and being left behind.
  • Thanks to donors like you, our students today are attending colleges ranging from NOVA Community College, to the College of William and Mary to Stanford University.

What We Do Together

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria is a truly unique organization, trusted by generations of ACPS students and families. To award as many scholarships as possible, we develop relationships with the people who believe in our students—the community in which they live, and, with time, the community our students may one day make contributions to themselves.  We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support our community shows graduating seniors year after year.

From ninth grade through college, the SFA is available to assist students and their families get the answers they need to develop as scholars. With offices on both King Street and Minnie Howard campuses, all ACHS students are welcome to visit us and speak with us year-round, including summer months. We work with PTAs and PTSAs, and partner with businesses and community organizations, neighbors, friends, alumni, staff, and ACPS administration. In addition to awarding scholarships, the SFA joins forces with the National College Attainment Network and Virginia College Access Network for richer resources, provides Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) workshops and individual FAFSA assistance, and holds special events throughout the year.

Equally important, how do we get every eligible senior to pursue a postsecondary path? College advising is the vital resource the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria provides to assist each senior in creating a plan for the future. Every year we try to help an even greater number of students. We also continue to see an increase in renewals because we are not just committed to helping our students get to college, we're also helping our recipients get to the finish line with little or no student-debt.

In 2025 the SFA awarded 215 first year scholarships valued at a total of $700,000 and renewed another $1.3 million in awards for the 2025-2026 academic year. Class of 2025 SFA recipients is enrolled in over 60 institutions. We are grateful for donations and support from the community that significantly benefit our year-round efforts on behalf of the bright, hardworking students at Alexandria City High School.
