About Pursuit Adaptive Sports and Recreation

Join with us to support the inclusive sports and recreation movement!

Pursuit, a 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization, is based in Alexandria, Virginia. Pursuit offers adults with disabilities in the City of Alexandria and surrounding areas opportunities to enhance their health and well-being through adaptive sports. Pursuit envisions an inclusive world where the lives of individuals with disabilities are impacted by building, encouraging, and supporting a community that includes friends and families participating together in adaptive sports and recreation events. Membership in Pursuit is free to adults with disabilities and their families and friends. Your support will help us continue to offer activities at no or lower cost.

Since 2019, Pursuit has been dedicated to helping to break down barriers to ensure that every individual, regardless of physical or cognitive challenge, has the opportunity to experience both athletic achievement and empowerment. Adaptive sports activities serve as catalysts to create inclusive and transformative environments for people with disabilities.

Adaptive sports have an impact on increasing overall holistic health outcomes, including social and emotional health while combating factors of social isolation for people with disabilities. Adaptive sports also assist in mitigating feelings of stigmatization and discrimination while facilitating positive self-image, self-efficacy and promoting inclusivity, personal growth and independence for participants.

Pursuit partners with many organizations to make adaptive sports like sailing, rafting and kayaking, skiing and snowboarding, cycling and indoor rock climbing, archery and bowling, and hiking, rolling and strolling accessible to all. See the gallery below for a glimpse at some of our activities.

Our partners include groups like Catalyst Sports, Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating, Beyond Boundaries, MedStar, Two Top Mountain, and the Adaptive Sports Center. Our newest partner, Four Mile Run Conservancy, the recipient of Virginia’s top environmental award for their adaptive kayaking dock in Alexandria, has selected Pursuit as the organization with which to launch their new adaptive paddling program.

Pursuit is a member of Move United, the premier national adaptive sports organization and also a member of the Virginia Adaptive Sports Coalition.

Your support enables Pursuit to make adaptive sports and recreation opportunities more accessible, affordable, and appropriate to residents with disabilities from Alexandria and the surrounding areas, in our efforts to build a more powerful inclusive and resilient community.
