Goodwill of Greater Washington

On any given morning in Alexandria, the doors of a Goodwill store open and neighbors arrive ready to start their day.

One associate may be a veteran who served our country and is now building a new chapter in civilian life. Another might be someone who was formerly incarcerated and is determined to move forward and provide for their family. Someone else may have struggled to find steady work and simply needed an employer willing to say yes.

For many people, the hardest step is not the willingness to work. It is finding someone willing to believe in them.

At Goodwill of Greater Washington, that belief becomes real opportunity. Store associates receive training in customer service, retail operations, and workplace skills that prepare them for lasting careers. With the support of career coaches, people facing employment barriers gain stability, confidence, and a path toward the future they want to build.

This year also marks a special milestone. The Goodwill Excel Center is celebrating ten years of helping adults return to school and earn the high school diplomas they once thought were out of reach. Many of these students are parents who want their children to see them cross the stage and finish what they started.

When graduation day arrives, the room fills with applause. Families rise to their feet. Graduates hold their diplomas high, surrounded by the people who believed in them along the way.

The impact of Goodwill of Greater Washington reaches far beyond the classroom. Donations from neighbors across our region are given a second life through Goodwill’s sustainability efforts, keeping more than 50 million pounds of materials out of local landfills every year. Those donations help create jobs, provide training, and open doors for people who are ready to move forward.
