Founded in 1969, ALIVE! an interfaith nonprofit dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger in the City of Alexandria, VA. ALIVE! is a community-based, volunteer-run organization helping people faced with emergency situations or long-term needs become capable of assuming self-reliant roles in the community. 

ALIVE! continues to be the organization that Alexandrians rely on.  Please make a gift - at any level - today and help us serve the neighbors who need us the most with life-changing resources and services:

• Hunger Relief through food distributions, community partnerships, and daily food deliveries.
• Emergency financial assistance for families who are struggling to pay rent, utilities, and meet basic needs.

• Donated furniture and household items for struggling individuals and families.

ALIVE! provides food, housing, financial assistance, housewares & furniture, and eviction prevention support to Alexandrians in need.

Did you know that ALIVE! serves roughly 20,000 people each month in the City of Alexandria who need essential grocery items? In addition to providing food to 17 local food pantries, ALIVE! distributes food at outdoor events and at two brick and mortar Food Hubs. Any Alexandria resident in need can pick up fresh bread, eggs, meat, produce, and shelf stable items.

 - Delivered groceries to the homes of 155 Alexandrians on a monthly basis through our Family Assistance Program

 - Supported more than 700 households with roughly $500,000 in emergency financial assistance for rent, utilities, and medical expenses

 - Renovated our ALIVE! House transitional housing space and expanded our services for incoming residents

 - Supplied more than 1,100 donated furniture and housewares items to 280 Alexandrian families

We are grateful to our Alexandria community for its support in helping us adapt services and expand our operating scale to meet increased calls for help. Your support remains important today and sustains our ability to be a constant resource for our neighbors. The need for food, rental assistance, and other basic needs has only increased in our community, and it takes all of us working together to keep our safety net strong.

Who We Are

Founded in 1969, ALIVE! is the oldest and largest private safety net for children, families and individuals living in poverty and with hunger in the City of Alexandria. Rooted in community, ALIVE! is comprised of neighbors helping neighbors: 47 faith-based organizations, 900+ volunteers, and over 5,000 partners and supporters. The Food, Shelter, and Financial Help which ALIVE! provides to thousands each month have been particularly critical during the current pandemic.
