The past few years have been HARD. But every Tuesday, I go to rehearsal, and each week I leave feeling better. Why?
Singing stimulates the vagus nerve—the main component of the parasympathetic "rest and digest" system—by creating vibrations in the larynx, vocal cords, and throat, which are directly connected to this nerve. This stimulation increases vagal tone, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and reduces cortisol, promoting relaxation and stress reduction.
Singing in a community (such as a choir or group) significantly improves mental health by lowering cortisol and releasing feel-good neurotransmitters like endorphins and oxytocin. This practice reduces anxiety, depression, and loneliness while fostering social bonding, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Even one session can lift moods and boost mental wellness.
Want to support that kind of wellbeing for AACC and the communities we bring music to? Make a gift today and help us create harmony in Alexandria and beyond.
